Gogy Esparza

On Monday, through the introduction from my good friend Eugene (Hypebeast) and Ephraim, I had the honour of meeting the multitalented Gogy Esparza. Gogy is a Massachusetts native and is currently living in NYC. He is a gifted photographer, as well as a barber when he is not shooting. Gogy mainly shoots with a film camera, and his works show his creative and raw talent.

I had dinner with him, along with Ephraim and Simon, who is also a correspondent for Hypebeast. We ate at a bbq lamb restaurant and the meat was damn good. Thanks to Ephraim on this! If you want to know where the good eats are in Tokyo, Ephraim's your man. Afterwards, we went out for drinks at Kinfolk, where we met some more people; Gérald, Kevin, Pavan and Stefan. It was a good night of good discussions, laughter and smiles.

Plastic Bags: Gift or Curse?

When you pick up groceries or you go to your local convenience store, do you think twice before getting a plastic bag for your goods? When you go to the store and you pick up a bottle of water or gum, do you tell the store clerk you don't need one? Plastic bags are great because they're convenient but we tend to use them a lot. We buy something, gets put into a plastic bag and then it's thrown out. We are conditioned that we don't even think twice about some things that we use and consume. I know it's not a perfect world, but we can make small changes to make it a better one. Try and reuse your plastic bags when you go grocery shopping; use an eco-bag if you have one, or two or three. Try to reduce your waste.

Imperial Troops invade (sightseeing) Yokohama

So, as I was heading to a wedding ring shop with the wife in Sakuragicho, she caught my attention and pointed me in the direction of interest; Star Wars characters. As I saw the Storm Troopers and an Imperial TIE fighter pilot, I was brought back to my childhood. I got giddy, yeah! So what. LOL. Anyways, i'm glad that I had my 7D with me, so I took several snaps of the Imperial Troops. It was kinda funny though, cuz it was blazing hot that day, but they seemed to be calm and cool, and they even took pics with passerbys. I gotta say, it was a good day.

Living in Japan over the past year has been great. I've been able to eat healthier due to the abundance of seafood and vegetables. I don't know why, but I never ate as much vegetables when I was living in Vancouver. On the downside though, i've been noticing some habits that the citizens here rarely practice or have not been able to even give a try. I'm about to rant because it seems to be more apparent to me here than when I was in beautiful British Columbia.

I've noticed that taxis constantly idle their cars here even while they're waiting for customers. Even when they're talking with their colleagues and hanging outside of their vehicles, their cars are still on. WHY, I ask, WHY!? Another thing too is that businesses, retail, restaurants, whoever, package shit like crazy. Do you really need a bag for your drinks? A tray is not good enough? I know customer service is top notch compared to other world standards, but the usage of plastic and paper consumption needs to be reduced. Carpooling? Does it exist?..... Maybe. But so far I see a good handful of people driving by themselves. You know what? Japan's got a great transportation system; TRAINS. Like i've read in a post, cars are a necessity back home, but is a hobby/ luxury in Japan. Yes transit costs are a bit expensive, but they're so accessible and convenient. These are just some of the pet peeves I have about living here. Yes, yes, they have good recycling programs, but it seems that they consume and waste more than reducing and recycling.

We need to educate on a local level. We need to teach our youth and educate them more on reducing, reusing and recycling. Many people of our world are not aware of the global impact that our actions make. I am not perfect in my practices, but I try to make less of an impact on my carbon footprint. I carry an eco-bag (reusuable), a tumbler for my drinks and use my own chopsticks when I can. I rarely drive here and I use mass transit. When I leave a room, I turn off the lights to conserve energy. So i'm basically trying to practice these habits and teaching my family and my friends too. I'm not changing people, i'm just trying to help change habits. We need to be more conscious now than ever. We are in a time where Mother Earth is suffering and if she dies, WE DIE. Get it?? Mother Earth can heal over time and she can be here forever, but we won't if we don't act now.

Act locally, think globally. We only have one Earth. Try and do your best to make better practices and choices. Teach others, show others by example. Have you watched "An Inconvenient Truth"? "The 11th Hour"? Reading news about the environment? Are people even aware of some the phenomenons that are happening around the world? There are some weather patterns which are not even normal nor natural. Summer's coming late; Winter's coming early. Let's do this people!

I don't know if what i'm saying makes sense, but I do know that it's only a matter of time before something horrible happens, and then people wake up and realize what's happening around them. Get conscious.

I'm done for now. I've never done anything like this before on my blog. I've never felt strongly about something such as this before. But living here and seeing it all around me, made an impact on me.

I hope what i've said will help others and make them act. Just trying to help the Earth that WE all live on.

It was a great Golden Week in Japan this past week. Great weather, great vibes and great shows. I was fortunate enough to meet 2 legendary DJs in Hip Hop; DJ Premier and Pete Rock. Hello Everyone,

I have to apologize again for not updating my blog in such a long time. I can't believe my last entry was on January 27, when DJ P-Luv (Defending 2009 Vancouver Champion, 3rd in Canada) was going to compete in the Red Bull Competition. Speaking of Red Bull comps, DJ Flipout (Vancouver 2010 Champion), who is repping Vancouver, flew to Toronto recently for the Reb Bull Thre3Style Canadian Final.

I grew up watching this t.v. show back in the late 80's. I always liked and wanted B.A. Barracus' van because it was so cool. I think one of my cousins had the toy van and all of the characters. Jealous I was. Anyways, I hope this will be somewhat of a good remake, unlike some of the other t.v. shows remade to a movie that were released. What do you think?

I just learned that this art installment from Vancouver artist Ken Lums was erected the day before I returned to Japan. I drove by this sign on my way to downtown on Monday afternoon using Clark drive and noticed this East Van cross as I was driving by. (Of course my eyes were on the road.) Happy New Year to you All!! Yes i'm late, but one of my resolutions is to provide you with weekly updates on this blog. I spent my new year with friends and family in Vancouver. Actually on NYE, I chilled out with wifey and my brothers, DJs P-Luv and OMG, at Bar None in Yaletown. We celebrated the new year together and had sandwiches at Duffin's for our after hours hunger. Hey y'all!

How's it going?

Watching in t.v. in Japan can be quite amusing. This commercial, which features Matsumoto Hitoshi from the TV talk show "Downtown", promotes a snack from Glico called Cratz. It's a mixture of pretzel chunks and whole almonds. It's marketed as an accompaniment with beer. The character he portrays is from a movie he starred in recently called "Shinboru" (the Symbol). I especially like the second half of the commercial.

I surprised her by just showing up. I haven't seen her since I moved to Japan, and it's been a while since we've seen each other. She was a yoga student in Vancouver, and stayed with my family and I for a month. She's a friend of a friend, and we've kept in touch since. She's currently a yoga instructor in Tokyo. The Playface

Hello everyone!

It's been a long time again. I've been busy working and helping out the W+K team with their project with Playstation. I've been asked to edit the web videos for the Playface campaign. Below is the TV spot which was edited by London's Dayn Williams. Just recently I recorded some video with Takeshi at the Playface event in Odaiba at Mediage. There were some PSP and Playstation 3 setups, as well as the Playface booths where it captured a gamers expressions in 360 degrees with 18 cameras recording simultaneously, like "the Matrix" effect. Hello all! Hope you've been enjoying your summer holidays.

It's been another long minute since i've posted anything, but the past few weeks i've been kinda busy working. Aside from my teaching job at Gaba, I worked with W+K on a Nike project and recently on another Playstation project. Busy, busy, busy....

Anyways at the beginning of the month my lady and I, along with her brother and family travelled up to Niigata Prefecture to visit some relatives. Niigata is popular for it's fireworks festivals and I have to agree on that. I've never seen a fireworks display over a landscape. Nothing comparable like the ones I usually see in Vancouver at the Celebration of Lights. You be the judge of it. Below is a video I took of the finalé and I had to pan a lot because my lens was not wide enough to catch the whole landscape.

Vancouver Slop invades Japan

On July 3rd, I hooked up with my good friends Matt and Rolf, who hail from Vancouver. Shortly, another friend who's been living in Japan, Ephraim, joined us. We went for eats at a gyoza restaurant in Harajuku. Afterwards we stalked the streets of Harajuku and Daikanyama.

Matt, who is an Environmental Biologist by day, runs a couple of business' on the side. He is 1/2 of Finale Design and 1/3 of Vancouver Slop. As the founder of Vancouver Slop, he blogs about restaurants and places that he eats. As he is always on the go, Matt hardly has the time to cook. Please check out his blog at www.vancouverslop.com. Hi people!

How is everyone doing?

Sorry I haven't been on for almost a month. Haven't been in front of my computer for quite sometime to actually post anything up. I've had a couple of friends come through to Japan; 2 from Vancouver and another from the UK. It's always great to see friends in another country.

Recently, i've worked on an audition shoot for W+K Tokyo Lab, for Playstation. It was great to work with them again, as i'm always looking forward to shooting video and taking photos. The day of the auditions was interesting, as all of the auditioners were eclectic and quite a bunch of characters. Thank you W+K!

This past weekend was eventful as well, as it was a long weekend in Japan. Monday was "Umi no hi" or Marine Day. Nothing special, but just a day to take advantage of the summer. It's been hot and humid here too. Not liking it because i'm a winter baby and I don't like the heat.

I'll post up photos soon again of the events that have happened in the past month. Hope you're all doing well. Take care and see you soon.

Early this week, I worked on the set of Chinza Dopeness' music video, shooting behind-the-scenes footage for W+K Tokyo Lab along with Takeshi-san.

5:30am - Wake up
6:45am - Leave the house
7:10am - Catch the train to Chuo Rinkan Station
8:00am - Arrive at Tama Plaza Station
--- Walk to the studio ---
8:30am - Arrive at the studio after hitting some Red Bull for the system
9:00am - Setup, makeup and wardrobe
11:00am/ 11:30am - Rehearsal
12:00pm - Start shooting
.................
7:00pm - Wrap

That's the basic schedule.

What even made my mornings and evenings better (sounding sarcastic), was the humidity. As you may or may not know, i'm a December baby, so i'm not fond of heat. But I "toughed it out" and brought me a towel to dry myself off.

The staff, talent and crew were very professional and friendly. Everyone was a class act. Chinza, the main talent, is a gifted lyricist and has a great personality. He is signed with W+K Tokyo Lab and is friends with HIFANA. Good people; good friends.

I look forward in working with Tokyo Lab in the future. Until then, keep smiling and keep creating.

Dedicated to the Hastings Set

As my title shows, this entry is dedicated to the Hastings Set. This movement has been inspiring artists from all mediums, as well as people who just love art, music and life. I was privileged to be a part of this experience when my good friend Jeff (Jeproc) invited me to a Hastings Set event. From there on my spirit felt renewed and had been longing for a movement, a collective to inspire me and others to open our minds and our ears and hearts. After the first event, I always looked forward to the Hastings Set and their partners work. I was getting hungry. It's been about a year since I was introduced to the Hastings Set. Everytime an event was hosted and associated with THS, I always encouraged friends and family to come along for the ride. Hanami (花見 - "flower viewing")

Kinda late on this post, as the cherry blossoms have been winded away by now. But I had the opportunity to experience Hanami in Japan for the first time. I saw some sakura (cherry blossoms) in Fujisawa, Shonandai, Roppongi and Odawara. How beautiful they are..... I spent hanami first with the crew from W+K Tokyo Lab and it was a fun experience. Later on in that week, I went to Odawara Castle with wifey and her mom. Good times looking at the sakura with a cold can of beer. Ahhhhh...

W+K Tokyo Lab Presents “VIDEO MUSIC” - March 28, 2009

This past Saturday, W+K Tokyo Lab hosted another event, "VIDEO MUSIC". A night filled with great visuals, music and people. One of W+K's artists, JEMAPUR, did a couple of sets, giving the crowd an experience not to be forgotten. Also, Jemapur will be doing an hour exclusive set on W+K Radio, tonight at 1am (9am-Thursday PST).

"VIDEO MUSIC" was held at Roppongi Hills, at Mado Lounge on the 52nd Floor (great view!!).

Funny how time flies...

So today marks my one month anniversary since i've moved to Japan. Life's been pretty chill for now until I get the proper docs to allow me to work. I've been seeing old friends and trying to meet some too. I've been spending most of my time at home and practicing my hiragana and katakana, as well as learning some Photoshop, After Effects and Illustrator skills from online tutorials. The one thing I need to do is polish up my cover letter, so that when my visa arrives, i'm able to work a.s.a.p. I've been trying to occupy my time up with online tutorials, surfing the web, reading a book and occasionally stepping out of the house to go for short walks around the neighbourhood.

About 2 weeks ago, I went to a live show in Kichijoji, Tokyo, with Ephraim and Masako, to check out Hifana and some other live acts. This was my first time seeing Hifana live and to my surprise Semba-san and a group of percussionists and musicians, Kargamos, with Hifana collectively played great music. I had the privilege of meeting more of the W+K Tokyo staff through one of the Creative Directors, Shane Lester, that I had met while on my trip to L.A. last November. They are all personable and great! It was a good night of great music and company.

While the hunt is still on, i'll do my best to update you all on a regular basis.

I arrived Feb.12, 2009. It's great to be back. Looking forward to my new life here. I previously lived here back in '03-'04 and taught English. I am familiar with the transportation system here and I can get by with the limited Japanese that I do know. I will be studying Japanese so that I can be more fluent and understand some of the conversations. Jet lag is done and the hunt for work has begun.

The Red Bull 3Style Competition at the Commodore Ballroom was off the chain, too bad I got drunk too early and had to leave midway through My!Gay!Husbands! set. In the early eve of Boxing Day, I celebrated another Christmas Dinner at the Bays. I've known most of my friends there since elementary and it's always great to spend our annual Christmas dinners together.

Afterwards, I headed down to the Biltmore Cabaret to the Hastings Set Boxing Day Blowout which featured a live set from Love and Electrik and Omar Khan. As always, great music by the duo and Omar, as well as the DJs (DJ She, Bles-sed and Niña Mendoza).

It was a night to remember. Dinner was prepared and presented by our host of the evening, Hans, with his 2 lovely assistants Lynn and her sister Anne Marie, who cooked up a mean ham. Also P-Luv and S-Dub gave out some home made cookies of their own to the party. The gift exchange was fun too. From Paul's pick of a blowup doll of Tera Patrick, to a couple of wallets, Hot Wheels and Barbie that had a special gift inside too. Food was great!! Thank you!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Yeah, yeah, I know i'm a tad late. Doing a lot of catch up now with posts. My apologies.

So this post features my 33rd Birthday, as well as the Zerohour Gift Exchange at Hapa Izakaya in Kits. As always, it was a night full of laughter and smiles. My secret Santa got me a triple threat of Tim Hortons Steeped Teas. Love it! Now I can enjoy my double-doubles at home. I received another special gift from my cousin John and Patti. For my birthday gift, they made a custom Munny for me. Thank you!! Love it! Also a special thank you to the Hapa crew for the shot, which Bryan shoved my face in first. Hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season, despite the really bad snowfalls we've had.

Last Sunday, a group of friends and I had our annual Christmas dinner, and my birthday dinner part deux at Hapa Izakaya in Kits. It was a good night of good eats, company and many laughs as usual. I also have to add that Vancouver was hit with another snow storm that evening, to make the count at three. And just a reminder that it'll probably snow again tomorrow for Christmas Eve. So to all you drivers out there; Stay home, grab a cab or drive very carefully. My cousin John and his mischievous partner (jk) Patti, made an original, one of a kind mini me. So happy and we just couldn't stop laughing. Thanks guys! :)

Oh yes, none other than Love and Electrik performed their second performance at Beatstreet Records out of the Five Feats of Strength Tour. Their first performance of the tour was the night before at the Sweatshop for the Schools Out For Winter event, which was hosted by Team Cream. Their next performance will be at the Shine Nightclub this Thursday, Dec. 18 with the Freshest Kids DJs and special guest DJ Bles-sed. Next up, I went to the Camilla D'Errico art show which was hosted at El Kartel on Robson St. She is one of the many favourite artists that I admire. She's such a cool person and real easy to talk with. I had the privilege of meeting her at her first show, about 2 years ago at El Kartel. She signed a t-shirt for me then and signed another one now. Thank you!! Also in attendance was Vincent Chan, who was featured on Hypebeast.com recently, along with his partner and a good friend of mine, Matthew Miyagawa from Finale Design. Atomic Cartoons Christmas Party 2008

Yeah for Christmas parties! This year I attended Atomic Cartoons Christmas Party which was held at the Alibi Room. It was hosted by the crazy, yet beautiful Alicia and her lovely sidekick Kelly. It was great to see old friends and catch up. Music was provided by Apple's iPod (various sources) and the food catered by the Alibi Room. The gift exchange was fun, as we were able to trade or "steal" from another. The gift that was stolen numerous times was Darth Tater (Mr. Potato Head). It went from Kelly to Alex to Ridd to Gary and back to Kelly (I think that was the order). Anyways, thanks again for a fun evening Atomic! See you all soon.

The Boyscouts of Vancity

If you don't know, you should know. The Boyscouts have been a staple to the DJ and music scene in Vancouver, and have spread their reputation throughout the world. When I first discovered them at a pool hall in Yaletown back in the late 90's, I believe it was Athletic Billiard Cafe, I vividly remember their humble beginnings. These guys have been rockin' parties since I can remember. The Boyscouts are DJ's P-Luv and Marlon J. English. You can catch them around the city in various clubs, especially with the Donnelly Group. Just recently they played at the new Gossip Nightclub (formerly Plush) at the Plaza of Nations, which is hosted by Gman and Rizk. Be sure to check them out if you want to party and/ or if you're visiting the Northwest Coast.

This was my last day :( I got up early to head out to Long Beach to check out some more stores. I then met up with Lisa and her family in Pasadena for brunch. Yum! Afterwards I ended off my trip by going to Santa Monica and watching the sunset there. *sigh*

And then randomly ran into the Corcuera Sisters at LAX.

This is Day 2 of my visit to LA. It started off on Melrose Ave. to La Brea Ave, checking out stores. During that time, I was caught in a thunderstorm (booo!!).

That evening though was the purpose of my trip: W+K Tokyo Lab - Tokyo.Ten Show in Alhambra. I was very fortunate and privileged to have met the Creative Team of W+K Tokyo Lab; Eric Cruz (+cruz), Shane Lester and Gino Woo (Woog). The show presents a compilation of work from artists that have collaborated with W+K Tokyo Lab. Tokyo.Ten is a compilation of DVD, Book and Blog that chronicles their entire audiovisual output since they began five years ago. The exhibition included prints, dvd and cd artwork, and a video presentation. Music was also provided by Woog, Shane Lester and Nanopaul. I have become a big fan of Hifana since discovering them while living in Japan back in 2003-2004. I have frequented Shane Lester's blog to see what's been going on, as well as W+K Tokyo Lab's Blog too. Last year, during my trip to Japan to visit my lady, I had the opportunity to see where W+K Tokyo Lab's studio in Roppongi was. To see them in person though was weird, just because I would always see them on their blogs.

I'm currently in LA to attend an art show on Saturday night. Happy Halloween to all! Thanks to my cousin Mike for taking me out on my first night here. If you've never been to LA (West Hollywood) for Halloween, I definitely recommend it. People were in good spirits and dressed to impress. Drank a bit much, but a LA Hotdog is the s**t!! Common and N.E.R.D. @ Malkin Bowl - Sept.17, 2008

It has been 6 years since I last saw Common perform and I have to say that my second attendance to his show was amazing. Again with a live band and a small production, I was very happy to have attended this show.

I went down to the show with my cousin John and one of my best friends, Bryan. DJ Pump (Eh Team DJ's) opened up the show, and was followed up by N.E.R.D. They too put on an amazing set. N.E.R.D. is so alive when they're live. The one thing I really appreciated and took to heart was what Pharrell said on stage for a young 12 year old and to the youth . He gave a mad shout out to them which I thought deserves mad respect, as well as stressing education.

Common on the other hand, still shows how a gentleman should be. I'm really looking forward to Common's new album, "the Believer", which will be released in November 2008.

Okay, so this weekend was just party, after party, after party. From Friday at Republic with DJ OMG to the Hastings Set "Freedom" Party, to Saturday at Plush for SVS Style Dance Crew's 3 year Anniversary to Bar None with DJs P-Luv and OMG, to Sunday for Livestock's 3rd Annual Block Party. Phew?!

Ooh wee!... It's been a long time since i've been to a private event like this, where there was great music (live bands and DJs) and great people. It was hotter than a MF in the joint, but everybody's vibe was positive and all were having a good time. DJ's Niña, Gerald C. and Bles-sed rocked the decks and kept the crowd moving all night. Omar and friends, Curtis Santiago and his guitarist (sorry, but I don't remember names well), all the musicians, and for those that i've missed, gave great performances that evening. On August 3rd, 2008, my good friends Alex and Alicia, exchanged their vows and were married. YAY!! It was the most unique weddings' that i've attended. Hive Hair Spa is located on Oak St., near W.67th Avenue. This salon has 3 great stylists; Jun, Sho and Haruno. I was referred to this place by my good friend Cherrie. The stylists come from Japan and the experience in there is great and relaxing. First when you visit the salon, you are asked to fill out a form with your information, as well as a survey. Next you are escorted to the chair by a stylist (And the seats are comfortable; leather and with a foot rest. <きもち！>). Next you're offered a drink from their selection (tea, coffee, juice, etc). Also you have magazines to look at and read while your getting your cut. Jun, who is my stylist, has a great personality and is friendly. The stylists listen and understand your needs too and do a great job. Part of the service is a shampoo and wash and in traditional japanese practice, a short massage from head to shoulders provides a relaxing finish. Ok, so i'm still playing catchup. So a couple of events happened on July 1, Canada Day. First was Bryan's birthday, which involved a day trek around the seawall of Stanley Park and ended off with a nice dinner at Mr.Pickwick's on Denman. In the evening, the Boombox Saints performed at Lola's on West Broadway. Next up... Paul's Bday BBQ. Peace!

Pluskratch (Paul Mighty, Boombox Saints, Kut Co.) and Huggy Fresh (Boombox Saints) had their birthday celebration at Fabric. It was theme based and the theme was "futuristic". Sammie Jo Productions, Spectrum Entertainment, and 1st Love Wednesdays successfully put on a great show for the 2nd Annual SALAMAT Festival. With a DJ lineup you couldn't miss, all dj's kept the night going. There were performances from the SVS Style Crew, Pure Dance Crew, Toxic Slime Clique, Boombox Saints (sorry guys :( ), Jiggz (No Plan B.) and D-City; the night was hot and entertaining.

Pluskratch a.k.a. Almighty Paul Mighty, was sportin' and sellin' his new print "ALMIGHTY". In the back there were booths set up with some local organizations such as Enspire Foundation, the Philippine Womens Centre, and Glory MMA Apparel. Also body art provided by Got Funk Threads. Thank you to all who came down and supported. Also, KUYA was in attendance serving up hot eats for all of ya'll. I heard the puto was bangin' (extra butter :P). Anyhow, I hope you all enjoyed the night. Happy Philippine Independence Day!!
